STC 4021 Microphone. Often known as Ball and Biscuit, or Apple and Biscuit or even 8 ball - it's a classic vintage studio mic.
The 4021 microphone is a pressure operated moving coil or dynamic microphone and is a carefully engineered and precision built instrument, the general design of which has been proved over many years of use in high quality studio work and acoustical measurements. The polar response is omnidirectional; i.e., the mean sensitivity is independent of the direction of the incident sound, and the frequency characteristic is nearly so. This is, in part, achieved by the use of a spherical case and a porous front screen.
The internal acoustical arrangements were less elaborate in the 4021 than the earlier STC 4017 but the response at the upper part of the range was less dependent on the angle of incidence of the sound, which was an advantage as both mics were intended to be omni-directional and the 4021 was indeed more omni-directional at HF than the 4017.

it isnt for vocals really

Hang this guy way above the drummer and drive the mic pre to the limit and fade in just under for a great big sound. Doesn't suit all sessions but a great one to try depending on the situation. Worth buying if you can find one going for a good price

There are still a few of these around and they're great to have a play with and used as an alternative to the bog standard choices.
A good start in to building up a vintage mic collection.
