Miles Biography
Producer
Jason Miles has achieved as much success as anyone could
hope to achieve as a jazz composer, arranger, keyboardist
and synthesizer programmer. Miles work has been heard
on a variety of top-selling records, including Luther
Vandross' Power of Love, Michael Jacksons HIStory and
the classic Miles Davis album Tutu.
In
addition to his work with other artists, Miles has released
two highly acclaimed jazz albums of his ownWorld Tour
(1994) and Mr. X (1996), which featured stellar lineups:
Herbie Mann, Michael Brecker, Grover Washington Jr.,
Mark Islam, Janis Siegel, Marcus Miller and Luther Vandross.
Keyboard magazine critic Stephen Israel called Miles
one of the best in the business...one of the finest
composers around.
Miles
received an Emmy nomination for his musical work on
People: A Musical Celebration of Diversity, an animated
film on the Disney Channel that featured Vanessa Williams,
Peabo Bryson, Chaka Kahn, and other artists. He's had
many other triumphs as producer and writer, including
two award-winning children's videos: Phylicia Rashad's
Baby's Nursery Rhymes and Sigourney Weaver's The Snow
Queen. He's been involved in more than twenty projects
that have received Grammy Awards and/or nominations.
In
February 2000, Telarc released Miles ambitious Celebrating
the Music of Weather Report, a tribute to the seminal
progressive jazz band of the 70s and early 80s. The
project featured a lengthy roster of great artists:
Victor Bailey, Cyro Baptista, Jay Beckenstein, Michael
and Randy Brecker, Dennis Chambers, Vinnie Colaiuta,
Steve Gadd, Omar Hakim, Will Lee, Chuck Loeb, Marcus
Miller, John Patitucci, Joe Sample, David Sanborn, John
Scofield, and others.
Later
that same year, Miles followed the Weather Report project
with A Love Affair: The Music of Ivan Lins, a tribute
to the Brazilian musician/composer of global stature.
Guest artists on Love Affair included Sting, Grover
Washington, Jr., Vanessa Williams, Chaka Kahn and New
York Voices. The Sting trackShe Walks This Earth Alone
(Soborana Rosa)won a Grammy for Best Pop Male Vocal.
in
2001 he also produced a heartfelt tribute to the late
saxohonist Grover washington Jr. To Grover with Love
was a critical and commercial success. One of his highlghts
from 2002 was producing legendary saxophonist Gato Barbieri.
The Shadow of the cat won the Billboard Latin Jazz album
of the year and also garnered a Latin Grammy nomination.
In 2003 he produced and arranged the debut CD for vocalist
Cassandra Reed on Peak/Concord records.
Miles and Telarc reunite in early 2004 for the March
release of Coast To Coast, featuring an all-star team
of musiciansoperating as a session supergroup called
Maximum Groovesto explore the organic, improvisational
potential of groove-based contemporary jazz in Coast
To Coast. Built around the rhythm section of Miles,
drummers Steve Ferrone and Gene Lake, and bassists Will
Lee and James Genus, Coast To Coast features a host
of stellar guest players hailing from one end of the
country to the other: Gerald Albright, Herb Alpert,
Jay Beckenstein, Michael Brecker, Russ Freeman, Jeff
Golub, Jeff Kashiwa, Wayman Tisdale, Derek Trucks and
many others.
In
2005 miles to Miles in The Spirit of Miles Davis was
released on Narada/EMI.It recieved worldwide acclaim
and Jason played numerous live shows with a steller
band to play the music from the CD.
2005
also saw another Grammy Nomination for best instrumental
pop performace for the song Chasing Shadows from Maximum
Grooves,Coast to Coast.He's recently produced his good
friend Multi platinum singer /songwriter Suzy Bogguss
where He and Suzy created a true hybrid sound that incorporates
Nashville with NY Grooves and steller songs using musicians
from Nashville and New York. Look for that release in
2006.
2006
will also see the release of his new production What's
Going On-The songs of Marvin Gaye-It's 21st century
view of Marvin Gaye Songs that incorporates,funk,Bossa
Nova and Downtempo elements.
