George Shilling visited Jimmy at his lovely studio on a wet and rainy day in London to find out more about Jimmy's huge success and to find out how he made the long journey from the Orkney Islands to top of the charts.
Grammy winning record producer / songwriter Jimmy Hogarth has worked with a huge number of talented artists including KT Tunstall, Corinne Bailey Rae, Amy Winehouse, James Blunt, Christina Aguilera, Beverly Knight, James Morrison, Duffy, Lisa Marie Presley, Paolo Nutini, Maverick Sabre, James Morrison, Ren Harvieu, Queens of the Stone Age, Sia, Estelle, Kristina Train, Suzanne Vega, Tina Turner, Herbert Gronemyer, Bond, Roger Sanchez, UNKLE, Shakespears Sister, Joe Strummer, Alesha's Attic and many, many more...
At age 16 Jimmy had moved from the Orkney's to Glasgow to study photography. Once in Glasgow he played in several local bands, later towards the end of the photography degree he had to choose the path as a photographer or take up the offer of a mate to go to London and audition for a band. Jimmy went to London and got his first paying gig as the guitarist for Shakespeare's Sister. "It was a revelation to be paid for playing guitar - something I'd never considered before!"
Jimmy went on to form his own band and moved to Los Angeles. At the turn of the millennium, Jimmy set up his studio space in London to work with some of the most distinctive and successful singers of the last decade.
We recorded this interview at his own music studio in West London and as there was so much 'interesting stuff' we have kept most of the interview in with very few cuts. Special thanks to Jimmy for his time and to George Shilling for asking the questions!
