Interview

Peter Hewitt-Dutton

Metropolis mastering engineer

Peter Hewitt-Dutton talks at Metropolis Mastering with Mike Exeter

Mike Exeter visited Metropolis Studios to meet with mastering engineer Peter Hewitt-Dutton and find out more about vinyl mastering and the ongoing series of live, direct-to-disk sessions that have been filmed at Metropolis.

This is a two part feature, the first video which is here now is a chat about the mastering process and Mike finds out more about how some producers and artists are just sending off their masters to a disk mastering plant with no care about the cutting.

The second feature shows Peter setting up and cutting one of Mike's recent mixs, this is a pretty long and mostly undedited video to hopefully capture more detail and gives more depth but it runs for 1 hour so do get settled before viewing.

Special thanks to Peter and everyone at Metropolis Studios for helping make this feature possible and of course Mike Exeter!

Some blurb from Metropolis:

Whilst completing his degree at the University of Manchester, Peter went to work at the legendary Ocean Way Studios in California.

It was here he developed and honed his scrupulous eye for detail and listening skills under the guidance of the greats in the business like Jack Joseph Puig and Allen Sides, something which he has continued here at Metropolis.

Now over a decade later that experience has led Peter to continue the Metropolis traditions of pushing what is possible with vinyl and he has specialized in the much sought after field of half speed cutting. Peter is an integral member of the Metropolis Mastering team and his credits include a #1 Album in Italy with ‘Made In London’ by Noemi.
